Das Sprichwort stammt aus der Bibel, aus den Sprüchen Salomos 16,18: „Hoffart kommt vor dem Sturz und Hochmut kommt vor dem “ (Lutherbibel). Hochmut (superbia) galt zudem als eine der sieben Todsünden.
