Bildlich: Normalerweise legt man das Zaumzeug am Kopf des Pferdes an, am Schwanz - wer „von hinten aufzäumt“, beginnt also verkehrt. Der genaue Ursprung ist nicht geklärt, doch Luther verwendete die Wendung schon 1530.
