Konjunktiv II: How Germans Stay Polite
Eight verb forms separate a request from a demand in German. Learn waere, haette, koennte and wuerde the way natives actually use them - as manners.

is filed under grammar in every textbook and used as manners in every bakery, office and doctor's waiting room in the German-speaking world. The practical version of it is small: about eight forms - wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte, wüsste, möchte - plus the pattern würde + infinitive for everything else. Learn those and you can be polite, speculate, and express regret. That is roughly ninety percent of what does in speech.
The rest of the paradigm, the beautiful old strong forms like hülfe, träte, stürbe, büke, is real German that almost nobody says out loud. If you are reading Kleist you need it. If you are ordering coffee, asking your landlord for a repair, or softening a disagreement in a meeting, you need the eight. Textbooks that drill the full table before teaching Ich hätte gern get the priority exactly backwards.
The forms that actually matter in speech
These are the ones that come out of native mouths every day, in the ich/er-sie-es form. The Sie form adds -n (könnten, hätten, wären).
| What it does | Everyday line | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| sein | wäre | soften statements, hypotheticals | Das wäre super. |
| haben | hätte | requests, wishes, past regret | Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. |
| können | könnte | polite requests, possibility | Könnten Sie mir helfen? |
| werden | würde | carries all other verbs | Ich würde sagen, ja. |
| mögen | möchte | wanting, politely | Ich möchte einen Termin. |
| müssen | müsste | soft obligation, guesses | Das müsste reichen. |
| sollen | sollte | advice | Du solltest da anrufen. |
| dürfen | dürfte | very formal requests, estimates | Dürfte ich kurz stören? |
| wissen | wüsste | tentative knowledge | Ich wüsste da was. |
For every other , the working rule is würde + infinitive: ich würde das anders machen, wir würden gern früher anfangen, würdest du kurz warten? Weak verbs have no distinct at all - kaufte is both "bought" and "would buy" - so the würde-form is not a learner's shortcut, it is what native speakers use to avoid the ambiguity.
The one thing to avoid: würde with sein, haben and the modals. Ich würde das gern haben is understandable but clumsy; ich hätte das gern is what people say, and exam markers will notice the difference.
Why the full paradigm is mostly literary
The classical formation is: take the preterite stem, add an if the vowel allows, add the endings -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en. Er kam becomes er käme. Ich ging becomes ich ginge. This is entirely correct German and it is also, for most verbs, the register of newspapers, novels and legal prose.
A handful survive in speech beyond the eight above: käme, gäbe, ginge, fände, ließe, brauchte, bräuchte all turn up naturally, especially es gäbe and ich bräuchte. Learn them as vocabulary items when you meet them, not as a table to recite. The honest position: if your goal is spoken fluency, drilling hülfe is time you could spend on collocations that you will use this week.
If your goal is reading nineteenth-century literature or drafting German contracts, that changes. For that, a full reference grammar - Hammer's German Grammar and Usage is still the best in English - will serve you better than any app, including this one. Apps are built for retrieval of high-frequency material; reference books are built for the long tail.
Politeness: the real reason to learn it
English softens requests with modal stacking and question tags: "could you possibly", "would you mind", "if that's okay". German does most of the same work with a single vowel change. Drop it and the sentence does not become neutral - it becomes an instruction.
| Direct form | How it lands | version |
|---|---|---|
| Geben Sie mir einen Kaffee. | barking at staff | Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. |
| Ich will einen Termin. | childish, demanding | Ich würde gern einen Termin vereinbaren. |
| Haben Sie Zeit? | fine, but bare | Hätten Sie kurz Zeit? |
| Das ist falsch. | flat contradiction | Da wäre ich mir so sicher. |
| Sie müssen das nochmal machen. | an order | Sie müssten das nochmal machen. |
| Ich brauche die Datei heute. | pressure | Ich bräuchte die Datei heute. |
One calibration point, because overstating this is a common guide mistake: Können Sie mir helfen? is not rude. It is completely normal and you will hear it constantly. Könnten is simply one degree softer, and that degree is what makes strangers, officials and colleagues relax. The genuinely blunt options are the bare to someone you do not know, and ich will.
Adding bitte does not fix a bare either. Geben Sie mir bitte einen Kaffee is polite enough in a fast queue, but ich hätte gern is the default of people who live there. In workplace email and meetings the effect is stronger still - see German at work for how register shifts once colleagues are involved.
Hypotheticals, wishes and regret
The second use is the conditional. The shape is fixed: wenn clause with the at the end, then the , usually with würde or a modal.
- Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich Klavier lernen.
- Wenn das billiger wäre, würde ich es kaufen.
- Ich würde mitkommen, wenn ich könnte.
Both halves need . Mixing an into the wenn-clause is one of the most audible learner errors, and it is a comprehension problem too: wenn ich Zeit habe means you might actually have time, wenn ich Zeit hätte means you do not.
Wishes take the same forms plus a signal word - nur, doch, or ich wünschte:
- Wenn ich nur früher angefangen hätte!
- Ich wünschte, ich könnte bleiben.
- Wäre ich doch zu Hause geblieben.
That last group introduces the past , which is one extra pattern for a large payoff: hätte or wäre + past participle. Ich hätte das nicht sagen sollen. Das wäre nicht nötig gewesen. Beinahe wäre ich zu spät gekommen. Regret, near-misses and unrealised plans all live here, and they come up in conversation far more than the present- hypotheticals that textbooks favour.
The errors that survive longest
- würde-stacking: wenn ich Zeit haben würde, würde ich kommen. Heard in casual speech, marked wrong in B2 writing. Use hätte in the wenn-clause.
- sollte and wollte look like the past: wollte and sollte have no , so they are identical to the preterite. Context does the work; do not invent wöllte.
- möchte has no past: for "I wanted to", use ich wollte. Ich möchte is present only.
- Over-politeness with friends: Könntest du mir vielleicht eventuell kurz helfen? to a flatmate sounds strained. Among friends, a plain with mal - gib mir mal das Salz - is warmer than caution.
- Konjunktiv I confusion: er sei, er habe, er komme is reported speech in journalism, a different system. When is identical to the , writers switch to Konjunktiv II - which is why you see sie hätten gesagt in news copy.
The grammar entries in the library lay out the conditional patterns and the past forms with full tables if you want the systematic view.
Learn eight verbs, not eighty
Here is a realistic plan. Week one: memorise wäre, hätte, könnte, würde and three ready-made frames - Ich hätte gern..., Könnten Sie...?, Ich würde gern.... Those three cover shops, cafés, appointments and most first requests. Week two: add müsste, sollte, dürfte, wüsste and the wenn-pattern. Week three: past with hätte/wäre + Partizip.
If you fly to Berlin on Friday, skip the plan and learn the three frames tonight. That is a genuinely better use of an evening than any grammar system, and no app is needed for it.
If you are here for the long run, forms like these are exactly what spaced repetition is built for: small, high-frequency, and useless unless retrieval is automatic before the moment you need them. merke.me schedules them alongside the words and expressions they attach to, with native audio so könnten and konnten stop sounding alike. Have a look at the decks or the pricing, and start with Ich hätte gern.
