werden in German: future, passive, and becoming
One verb, three jobs, and a two-second test that tells them apart - plus why the participle loses its ge- in 'ist geprüft worden'. Decode officialese fast.

German makes one do three unrelated jobs, and werden is that . It builds the future, it builds the passive, and on its own it means to become. Learners lose whole paragraphs of a rental contract or a Behörde letter because they read a passive as a future, or read becoming into a sentence that is simply describing a process someone else is doing to them.
The good news: you never need context to tell them apart. Look at the word that follows `werden` at the end of the clause. Bare means future. means passive. or bare means becoming. That test is mechanical, it works in every clause type, and it takes about two seconds once you have run it a few hundred times.
The three-way test
| What sits at the end | Job | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| bare | future or assumption | Er wird kommen. | He will come. |
| passive (process) | Er wird gefahren. | He is being driven. | |
| becoming | Er wird alt. | He is getting old. | |
| bare , | becoming | Er wird Lehrer. | He is becoming a teacher. |
The cases stack, and that is where the test earns its keep. Der Antrag wird geprüft werden ends in an (werden), so the outer frame is future; inside it sits geprüft werden, a passive. Future passive. Read from the outside in.
does not break the test, it just moves the pieces. In a werden is the finite in position 2 and everything else piles up at the end: Der Antrag wird morgen geprüft. In a werden goes last: ..., weil der Antrag morgen geprüft wird. Add a modal and it slides one slot further: ..., dass der Antrag eingereicht werden muss. The item immediately before the finite is still your evidence.
Forms: wird, wurde, worden, geworden
werden is irregular in exactly the places that hurt: du wirst, er/sie/es wird. The rest is regular - ich werde, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden. The past is weak and predictable: wurde, wurdest, wurde, wurden, wurdet, wurden. You will meet ward in old texts and hymns; ignore it for production.
The würde is a separate creature. würde + is a conditional, not a future: Ich würde das nicht machen means I wouldn't do that, never I will do that. Learners who treat würde as "polite werden" end up saying the opposite of what they mean in negotiations.
The perfect is where the two participles split:
- geworden -
werdenas a full : Sie ist Ärztin geworden. / Es ist kalt geworden. - worden -
werdenas the passive auxiliary: Der Brief ist geschrieben worden.
Why does the passive one lose its ge-? Because there is already a ge- in the clause doing the lexical work. German strips the prefix off the auxiliary to keep the two apart, the same instinct that produces the double in Ich habe arbeiten müssen. The practical rule needs no theory: if another Partizip II is present, write `worden`; if `werden` is alone, write `geworden`. And werden always takes sein in the perfect - never hat geworden.
The passive ladder in one table
This is the grid that unlocks official German. Every row is werden doing the same job in a different .
| Active | Passive | |
|---|---|---|
| Man prüft den Antrag. | Der Antrag wird geprüft. | |
| Man prüfte den Antrag. | Der Antrag wurde geprüft. | |
| Man hat den Antrag geprüft. | Der Antrag ist geprüft worden. | |
| Man hatte den Antrag geprüft. | Der Antrag war geprüft worden. | |
| Man wird den Antrag prüfen. | Der Antrag wird geprüft werden. | |
| with modal | Man muss den Antrag prüfen. | Der Antrag muss geprüft werden. |
In writing, the passive (wurde geprüft) dominates; in speech, especially in the north, people reach for ist geprüft worden. Both are correct - the register differs, not the meaning.
The modal row is the one you actually meet on paper. Der Antrag muss bis zum 30. Juni eingereicht werden. Die Unterlagen können online hochgeladen werden. Ihnen wird ein Termin zugewiesen. Bureaucratic German avoids naming an agent on purpose, so von and durch phrases are often simply absent - the letter tells you what happens, not who does it. If you want the full agent-and-alternatives treatment, including sein-passive versus werden-passive and how to dodge the passive in your own writing, that lives in the passive guide. This page is about the .
The edge cases the test does not solve
Adjective or participle? Some forms have hardened into adjectives, and then werden means becoming, not passive. The sehr test separates them: if you can put sehr in front, it is an . Er wird sehr bekannt works, so bekannt is adjectival - he is becoming well known. Er wird sehr verhaftet is nonsense, so verhaftet is a real - he is being arrested.
Process or state? Der Schalter wird um 8 Uhr geöffnet is an event: at eight, someone opens it. Der Schalter ist von 8 bis 16 Uhr geöffnet is a state: those are the opening hours. Confusing these two costs you an appointment.
Future that is not future. werden + very often expresses an assumption about the present: Sie wird schon zu Hause sein means she's probably home by now, not she will be home. Meanwhile, real future time usually gets plain plus a time word: Morgen fliege ich nach Wien. If you use werden for every English will, you sound stiff and, half the time, speculative.
bekommen-passive. Er bekommt das Buch geschenkt - the recipient becomes the . It is common in speech and completely invisible if you are only scanning for werden.
An honest note on where to learn this
For exhaustive coverage - every restriction on impersonal passives, every that refuses one - a reference grammar beats any app. Hammer's German Grammar and Usage or the free Grammis database from the IDS Mannheim will answer questions no course page addresses. Buy or bookmark one.
And if you are at A1 or A2, do not drill the passive productively yet. You need werden + (es wird kalt), werden + (ich werde Lehrerin), and the ability to recognise wird gemacht as "someone does it". Producing passives is a B1 concern; reading them is an urgent A2 concern the moment you receive your first official letter.
Make the test automatic
Knowing the rule takes five minutes. Applying it at reading speed, mid-sentence, in a clause where werden is four words away from its , takes repetition on real sentences - which is exactly what spaced review is for. The library has the werden patterns broken into their three jobs with audio examples; collocations covers the fixed officialese chunks like zur Verfügung gestellt werden and in Kraft treten that you will otherwise decode word by word forever. Add the werden decks and let the schedule bring ist geprüft worden back until you stop noticing it. See pricing for what the full A1-C2 course costs.
