stellen or stehen?
a1A pair like legen and liegen, only upright: stellen is the action with the accusative (someone puts something there), stehen the resulting state with the dative (it stands there). Stellen is regular, stehen is not: stand, gestanden.
stellen
The movement: putting something somewhere upright. Ask wohin, answer in the accusative. Regular: stellte, gestellt.
Ich stelle die Flasche auf den Tisch.I put the bottle on the table.
stehen
The state: being somewhere upright. Ask wo, answer in the dative. Irregular: stand, hat gestanden.
Die Flasche steht auf dem Tisch. The bottle is standing on the table.
The mistake
Ich stehe das Glas in den Schrank.
Ich stelle das Glas in den Schrank.
If you move something, you need stellen and the accusative. Stehen cannot take an object - you stand yourself, you do not stand a thing.
Rule of thumb
Two syllables, two roles: stellen has a double l like its double involvement (someone and an object), stehen stands alone.
