Explanation
A small group of strong verbs lengthens the stem vowel e to ie in the - again only in the du and er/sie/es forms. The ich, wir, ihr and sie forms keep the plain e. Endings stay regular; only the vowel becomes long ie.
- sehen → du siehst, er sieht (to see)
- lesen → du liest, er liest (to read - only one s in the du form)
- empfehlen → du empfiehlst, er empfiehlt (to recommend)
- geschehen → es geschieht (to happen)
- stehlen → du stiehlst, er stiehlt (to steal)
So it is ich sehe but du siehst / er sieht.
Common mistake: Do not use ie in the ich/wir/ihr forms - it is ich lese, never ich liese. With lesen, the du form has just one s: du liest, not du liesst.
About Irregular verbs: e → ie (sehen, lesen)
Some strong verbs lengthen stem 'e' to 'ie' in the du- and er/sie/es-forms: sehen → du siehst, er sieht.
e→ie in du/er forms; also empfehlen (du empfiehlst).
Manche starken ändern den Stammvokal e zu ie in der du- und er/sie/es-Form: sehen → du siehst, er sieht.
Caution
Only du/er forms change: ich lese, but du liest, er liest. 'liest' is spelled with one s (stem ends in -s).
