Negation: 'nicht' vs. 'kein'

German has two main negators and the choice between them follows a clear rule. Use kein to negate a noun that has an indefinite article or no article at all; use nicht for everything else (nouns with a definite article, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases).

• Ich habe ein Auto. → Ich habe kein Auto. - I have no car.
• Ich habe Geld. → Ich habe kein Geld. - I have no money.
• Das ist mein Auto. → Das ist nicht mein Auto. - That isn't my car.
• Der Kaffee ist heiß. → Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß. - The coffee isn't hot.

kein is declined like the indefinite article ein: keinen Kaffee (Akk. m.), keine Zeit, keine Probleme (pl.). For sentence negation, nicht is placed as late as possible - but before the part it negates and before sentence-final infinitives/participles: Ich kenne den Mann nicht.

Common mistakes:

• Saying nicht ein where kein is required: Ich habe nicht ein Auto should be Ich habe kein Auto.
• Using kein with a definite article: Das ist kein mein Auto is wrong → Das ist nicht mein Auto.
• Placing nicht too early in sentence negation.

Choose 'kein' to negate a noun that has an indefinite article or none; use 'nicht' for everything else. Sentence-negating 'nicht' goes as late as possible.
