Explanation

The correlative weder … noch (neither … nor) negates two coordinated elements at once. Crucially, it carries the itself, so *no additional or *** is needed - the stays positive in form.

  • Er trinkt weder Kaffee noch Tee. - He drinks neither coffee nor tea.
  • Sie hat weder angerufen noch geschrieben. - She neither called nor wrote.
  • Das Essen war weder warm noch frisch. - The food was neither warm nor fresh.

weder … noch can link nouns, verbs, adjectives or whole clauses. When it joins two subjects, the usually agrees with the nearer or appears in the : Weder er noch seine Kollegen wussten Bescheid.

Common mistakes:

  • Adding a redundant : Er trinkt nicht weder Kaffee noch Tee is wrong - drop the nicht.
  • Mixing up the parts (weder … oder) - the fixed pair is weder … noch.
  • Word-order slips: after noch in main-clause coordination the finite comes first (… noch hat er geschrieben) in inverted style.

About Correlative negation: weder … noch (neither … nor)

'weder … noch' (neither … nor) negates two coordinated elements at once; no extra '/kein' is added.

Use 'weder' before the first element and 'noch' before the second. It can link nouns, verbs or whole clauses: 'Sie hat weder angerufen noch geschrieben.'

'weder … noch' verneint zwei koordinierte Glieder gleichzeitig; eine zusätzliche (nicht/kein) entfällt.

Caution

Do not add another negation: 'Er trinkt weder Kaffee noch Tee' (not 'trinkt nicht weder …'). The verb stays positive.
