Explanation

The du-imperative gives a command to one person you know well. Take the du-form of the , drop the ending -st, and drop the : du kommst becomes Komm!

  • Komm! (come), Geh! (go), Warte! (wait)
  • Verbs with a stem change e to i/ie keep it: du isst becomes Iss!, du nimmst becomes Nimm!, du liest becomes Lies!, du sprichst becomes Sprich!
  • Verbs with a to ä drop the : du fährst becomes Fahr! (not Fähr).
  • sein is irregular: Sei ruhig!
  • split: aufstehen becomes Steh auf!

Common mistake: Do not keep the -st ending or add du. It is Komm!, never Du kommst! or Kommst! And say Fahr!, not Fähr.

About Imperative: du-form (Komm!)

The du- uses the bare stem and drops the : Komm! Geh! Warte!

Drop -st and 'du': du kommst → Komm!. e→i stays (Iss!, Nimm!), but a→ä is dropped (Fahr!).

Der du- nutzt den Verbstamm ohne : Komm! Geh! Warte!

Caution

Take the du-form, drop -st and the pronoun: du kommst → Komm! Verbs with e→i keep the change (du isst → Iss!); a→ä verbs do NOT (du fährst → Fahr!).
