The German Genitive: Where It Actually Lives
Four prepositions, an -s ending and a few fixed phrases carry the German genitive. Learn where it is required, where von wins, and what exams punish.

The honest answer: you need to recognise the German everywhere and produce it in about four places. Those places are the prepositions während, trotz, wegen, statt (plus their formal cousins innerhalb, außerhalb, aufgrund, angesichts), possession with names (Annas Buch), possession with a determiner in written German (das Ende des Films), and relative clauses with dessen/deren. Everything else in speech gets handled by von plus , and that is not lazy German - it is the normal spoken standard.
The complication is that the two systems disagree in public. Wegen dem Wetter is what you will hear from educated native speakers in Munich, Cologne and Hamburg every day. It is also what a Goethe B2 corrector, a DSH marker or a German employer reading your cover letter will treat as an error. You do not have to pick a side. You have to know which room you are in. If you have not met the four cases yet, start with our overview of the German case system and come back - this page assumes you know what a is and want to know when to actually use it.
The forms: -s, -es, and the ones that don't move
Only masculine and neuter nouns take an ending. Feminine and plural nouns change nothing but their .
| type | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masc./neut., one syllable | -es | des Hauses, des Kindes, des Mannses |
| Ending in -s, -ß, -x, -z, -tz | -es (obligatory) | des Platzes, des Fußes, des Reflexes |
| Masc./neut., two or more syllables | -s | des Lehrers, des Fensters, des Urlaubs |
| Ending in a vowel or -el/-er/-en | -s | des Autos, des Vaters, des Wagens |
| N- masculines | -en / -n | des Studenten, des Kollegen, des Herrn |
| Feminine | none | der Frau, der Arbeit, der Universität |
| none | der Kinder, der Häuser, der Studenten |
A few nouns wobble between the two: des Tages and des Tags are both correct, and des Monats is fixed. A small group takes -ns: des Namens, des Herzens, des Glaubens, des Willens. Adjectives inside a phrase always end in -en: trotz des kalten Wetters, während der langen Pause.
One trap worth naming: the -es on the is not optional decoration. Trotz des Regen is wrong; it must be trotz des Regens. Learners who drop the ending lose the same mark as learners who use the wrong .
The four prepositions that carry the load
Grammars list well over a hundred prepositions that govern the . Four of them do most of the real work, and a second tier shows up constantly in written German. Here is what standard usage requires versus what you will hear.
| Standard (writing, exams) | Common in speech | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|---|
| wegen | wegen des Wetters | wegen dem Wetter | extremely common, still marked wrong |
| während | während des Essens | während dem Essen | Same split |
| trotz | trotz des Regens | trotz dem Regen | is standard in Austria and Switzerland |
| statt / anstatt | statt des Autos | statt dem Auto | Same split |
| innerhalb / außerhalb | innerhalb eines Jahres | innerhalb von zwei Jahren | von is fully correct with bare plurals |
| dank | dank seines Einsatzes | dank seinem Einsatz | Both accepted by Duden |
| laut | laut des Berichts | laut dem Bericht | Both accepted |
| aufgrund, angesichts, anhand, mittels, seitens | only | only | Formal register, no spoken variant |
Two details that save marks. First, when the has no , no ending appears at all: wegen Umbau geschlossen, statt Geld. Second, with pronouns the standard form is not wegen mir but meinetwegen, deinetwegen, seinetwegen - and wegen mir is precisely the kind of thing a C1 examiner notices.
The rest of the prepositions - zwecks, hinsichtlich, bezüglich, infolge, unweit, oberhalb, zugunsten - belong to contracts, reports and academic writing. Learn to read them. Do not force them into an email.
Where von wins, and where it is the only option
Von plus is not a downgrade. In three situations it is the correct choice even in careful writing.
- No determiner to mark the case. Die Herstellung von Möbeln, der Preis von Büchern. You cannot say die Herstellung Möbel, so von is obligatory.
- Names without an article, especially foreign ones. Die Musik von Mozart competes with Mozarts Musik; die Regierung von Peru beats an awkward .
- Chains. Die Meinung des Vaters meiner Freundin is grammatical and horrible. Die Meinung vom Vater meiner Freundin is what people write and say.
In casual speech, von simply takes over: das Auto von meinem Bruder, der Freund von der Anna. If your goal is a conversation in a Berlin kitchen, you can go a whole evening without producing a single phrase and sound entirely native.
Names, apostrophes and the one everyone uses
The -s on names survives in every register, spoken and written: Annas Buch, Peters Auto, Deutschlands Hauptstadt, Berlins Bürgermeister. This one is worth drilling to automaticity, because it is short, frequent and free.
The rules are narrow. No apostrophe: Anna's Buch is the famous Deppenapostroph and looks illiterate in German, even though shop signs are full of it. Names already ending in an s-sound (-s, -ß, -x, -z) take a bare apostrophe instead: Hans' Fahrrad, Fritz' Idee, Marx' Werke - or, far more naturally in speech, das Fahrrad von Hans. Titles come along for the ride: Herrn Müllers Büro, Frau Schmidts Antwort.
What you should not imitate, however often you hear it: dem Thomas sein Auto. It is real, regional, and wrong in every written context.
Where the is quietly alive: fixed phrases and dessen
Outside prepositions, the lives on in expressions that no one parses as grammar any more. These are vocabulary, not rules, and are best learned whole - the same way you would learn any collocation:
- eines Tages - one day
- meines Erachtens / meines Wissens - in my opinion / as far as I know
- letzten Endes - ultimately
- schweren Herzens - with a heavy heart
- allen Ernstes - in all seriousness
- um Himmels willen - for heaven's sake
- der Einfachheit halber - for the sake of simplicity
- jemanden eines Besseren belehren - to set someone straight
The relative pronouns dessen and deren are also fully alive, including in speech: der Mann, dessen Auto vor der Tür steht; die Kollegin, deren Nummer ich verloren habe. B2 writing tasks reward them, and there is no von workaround that sounds as good.
Finally, a handful of verbs and adjectives govern the : jemanden des Diebstahls beschuldigen, sich einer Sache bewusst sein, es bedarf einer Erklärung, gedenken. This is courtroom and obituary register. Recognise it in a news ; do not build a speaking strategy around it.
What this means for how you study
Split your effort. Recognition should be broad: every form, every formal , every fixed phrase, encountered in real sentences until they read as normal. Production should be narrow and automatic: the -es/-s endings, the four core prepositions, name possessives, dessen/deren.
And a concession. If you want an exhaustive list of every with usage notes and regional variation, no app beats a reference grammar - Hammer's German Grammar and Usage or the free entries on DWDS will give you more detail than we ever will. What a reference book cannot do is make trotz des schlechten Wetters come out of your mouth without a pause. That takes repetition on a schedule, which is a different job.
That is the job merke.me does. prepositions, endings and the fixed phrases sit in our decks as full sentences with native audio, scheduled so you meet während des Essens again exactly when you were about to forget it. The grammar explanations live in the library, the individual words in vocab, and you can see what a full A1-C2 course costs on the pricing page. Start with the four prepositions this week - it is maybe thirty sentences, and it removes the single most visible error in intermediate German writing.
