ein paar or ein Paar?

a2

Only the capital letter separates them, and it changes the number: ein paar means a few, an indefinite amount. Ein Paar is exactly two that belong together - two shoes, two people.

ein paar

An indefinite small quantity, written in lower case, never inflected. Like einige, but more colloquial.

Ich brauche noch ein paar Minuten.I need a few more minutes.

ein Paar

Exactly two things or people that belong together. A noun, hence capitalised, plural die Paare.

Ich habe ein Paar Schuhe gekauft.I bought a pair of shoes.

The mistake

Im Schrank stehen ein paar Schuhe - gemeint sind zwei zusammengehörige.

Im Schrank steht ein Paar Schuhe.

Written in lower case it means an indefinite number of single shoes, not two that match. Capitalisation is not cosmetic here, it states the quantity.

Rule of thumb

Can you say two? Then capitalise. Can you say a few? Then use lower case.
