nicht müssen or nicht dürfen?

a2

Negation works differently from English: nicht müssen means something is not necessary (you don't have to), nicht dürfen means it is forbidden (you must not).

nicht müssen

No necessity, but perfectly allowed. Often replaceable by „nicht brauchen zu“: Du brauchst nicht zu kommen.

Du musst nicht mitkommen. You don't have to come along.

nicht dürfen

A prohibition: someone does not allow it. It can be sharpened with „auf keinen Fall“.

Du darfst hier nicht rauchen. You mustn't smoke here.

The mistake

Du musst hier nicht rauchen.

Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.

The first sentence allows smoking and merely says it is optional. A prohibition needs „nicht dürfen“.

Rule of thumb

The two cross over: English „must not“ is German „nicht dürfen“, English „don't have to“ is German „nicht müssen“.
