A modal verb, takes no zu and sends the second verb to the end of the clause. It expresses obligation.

brauchen

A full verb with an accusative object: to need something. Before a second verb it takes zu - except in the negative, where it is used like a modal.

Du brauchst nicht zu warten, ich komme später.You do not need to wait, I will come later.

The mistake

Ich brauche morgen früh aufstehen.

Ich muss morgen früh aufstehen.

Without a negation brauchen is not a modal: it needs either an object (ich brauche Hilfe) or a zu before the verb. For plain obligation you use müssen.

Rule of thumb

A rhyme German teachers use: anyone who uses brauchen without zu need not use brauchen at all.
