Two-part connector 'nicht nur … sondern auch' (not only … but also)

The two-part connector nicht nur … sondern auch ("not only … but also") adds a second, often stronger or more surprising point to the first. It works on the same level: two nouns, two adjectives, two verbs or two whole clauses.

The structure is:

• nicht nur + element A, sondern auch + element B

Examples:

• Er ist nicht nur klug, sondern auch nett. - He is not only clever but also nice.
• Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Spanisch. - She speaks not only German but also Spanish.
• Wir haben nicht nur gegessen, sondern auch getanzt. - We not only ate but also danced.

Common mistakes. The single most important rule: after a negation (nicht nur) you must continue with sondern, never with aber. Saying nicht nur klug, aber auch nett is wrong. Also keep the two linked parts parallel (noun with noun, verb with verb). When two full clauses are joined, nicht nur at the very front of a clause causes inversion: Nicht nur ist er klug, sondern … - but the simpler mid-sentence position shown above is far more common.
