Explanation
Many German verbs govern a fixed prepositional object (sich freuen über, warten auf, denken an). When the is not a but a whole clause, the cannot stand directly before the clause. Instead, a da(r)- pronoun that matches the anticipates the clause: darüber, darauf, daran, davon.
The continuation is then either a dass-clause or a zu-infinitive:
- Ich freue mich darüber, dass du gekommen bist. - I'm glad that you came.
- Wir warten darauf, dass der Bus kommt. - We're waiting for the bus to come.
- Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen. - I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Choice of clause type:
- Use a zu-infinitive when both parts share the same subject: Ich denke daran, bald umzuziehen.
- Use a dass-clause when the subjects differ: Ich denke daran, dass du bald umziehst.
Common mistakes:
- Dropping the da(r)- : Ich freue mich, dass … keeps the 's unexpressed and sounds incomplete with these verbs - say Ich freue mich darüber, dass ….
- Choosing the wrong (each has its own: warten auf, not warten für).
- Using a zu- when the subjects differ.
About Verbs with prepositional object + dass-clause / infinitive clause
Prepositional- verbs take 'da(r)+prep' plus a dass-clause or zu-: 'sich darüber freuen, dass …', 'darauf warten zu …'.
Verbs with a fixed refer to a following clause by means of a 'da(r)-' matching the preposition. If the subjects are the same, a zu- is preferred; if different, a dass-clause is used.
mit festem Präpositionalobjekt verbinden sich über ein 'da(r)-'- mit einem dass-Satz oder einem Infinitivsatz: 'sich darüber freuen, dass …'.
Caution
The 'da(r)-' pronoun (darüber, darauf, davon) anticipates the clause; use the zu-infinitive only when both subjects are identical.
