Verb 'danken' (to thank, + dative)

The verb danken ("to thank") takes a dative object: the person you thank is in the dative. Ask Wem? ("whom?") to identify it.

Conjugation is regular: ich danke, du dankst, er/sie dankt, wir danken, ihr dankt, sie danken.

Examples:

• Ich danke dem Lehrer. - I thank the teacher. (dem = dative)
• Ich danke Ihnen für die Hilfe. - I thank you for the help.
• Sie dankt ihren Eltern. - She thanks her parents.

To add what you thank someone for, use für + accusative: Ich danke dir für das Geschenk. - I thank you for the gift.

Common mistakes: The person thanked must be dative, not accusative: Ich danke dir, not Ich danke dich; Ich danke dem Lehrer, not den Lehrer. Don't confuse this with the casual Danke!, which needs no object at all.
