Explanation
Some strong verbs change their stem vowel a to ä in the - but only in the du and er/sie/es forms. The ich, wir, ihr and sie forms keep the plain a. The personal endings stay completely regular; only the vowel changes.
- fahren → du fährst, er fährt (to drive)
- schlafen → du schläfst, er schläft (to sleep)
- laufen → du läufst, er läuft (to run)
- tragen → du trägst, er trägt (to carry/wear)
- fallen → er fällt (to )
- halten → du hältst, er hält (to hold)
- lassen → du/er lässt (to let/leave)
So it is ich fahre but du fährst / er fährt.
Common mistake: Do not add the to ich/wir/ihr forms - it is ich fahre, never ich fähre. Only du and er/sie/es get the ä.
