Telling the time

*To ask the time, say Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? To answer, start with Es ist ....*

There are two systems:

• Everyday (12-hour) German uses nach (past), vor (to), Viertel (quarter) and halb (half):
• Es ist Viertel nach drei. - It is a quarter past three (3:15).
• Es ist Viertel vor vier. - It is a quarter to four (3:45).
• Es ist halb acht. - It is half past seven (7:30).
• Official (24-hour) German just reads the numbers: Es ist 19:30 Uhr. - It is 19:30.

To say at what time something happens, use um: Der Kurs beginnt um neun Uhr. - The class starts at nine.

Common mistakes:

• The biggest trap is halb: halb acht is 7:30, not 8:30. German counts toward the next full hour ('half on the way to eight').
• Don't forget um for the time at which something happens: um drei Uhr, not just drei Uhr.
