Explanation
als introduces a temporal for a single, completed event in the past. As a subordinating it sends the conjugated to the end of the clause.
Use als for exactly one unique past event - never for repetition and never for the present or future.
Examples:
- Als ich gestern nach Hause kam, regnete es stark. - When I came home yesterday, it was raining hard.
- Als der Krieg endete, war sie noch ein Kind. - When the war ended, she was still a child.
- Als ich klein war, wohnten wir auf dem Land. - When I was little, we lived in the countryside.
Contrast with wenn: For repeated past events ("every time") or for present/future events, German uses wenn, not als. Compare:
- Als ich klein war ... (one period, past) vs. Immer wenn ich klein war ... (wrong - als is required).
Common mistakes: Using wenn for a single past event (Wenn ich klein war is wrong; it must be Als ich klein war). Also forgetting -final position (Als ich kam nach Hause is wrong).
