Explanation
What it is. bis means until / till and marks the end point of a period of time.
How it is used. With clock times, days and dates bis is used directly, without an : bis Montag (until Monday), bis acht Uhr (until eight o'clock), bis morgen (until tomorrow). When an is needed, it usually combines into bis zu(m) / bis zur: bis zum Wochenende (until the weekend). It often pairs with von to frame a span: von Montag bis Freitag.
Examples.
- Ich warte bis acht Uhr. - I'll wait until eight o'clock.
- Ich arbeite von Montag bis Freitag. - I work from Monday to Friday.
Common mistakes. With bare times and days use bis alone (bis Freitag), but add zu before an (bis zum Abend, not bis dem Abend).
