Explanation
Regular (weak) verbs in the keep their stem and just swap the ending. For ich (I), take the stem and add -e.
- machen to ich mache (I do/make)
- spielen to ich spiele (I play)
- lernen to ich lerne (I learn)
You get the stem by removing -en from the : wohnen to wohn- to ich wohne. When the stem ends in -t or -d, an extra -e slips in for easier speaking: arbeiten to ich arbeite.
Common mistake: Do not drop the -e and say ich mach. Regular verbs always need the full -e ending in the ich-form.
About Regular verbs: ich-form (stem + -e)
In the ich-form a regular adds -e to the stem: ich spiele, ich wohne.
Stem = minus -en. The ich-form ending is always -e.
In der ich-Form hängt ein regelmäßiges -e an den Stamm: ich spiele.
Caution
Take the infinitive, drop -en to get the stem (spielen → spiel-), then add -e: ich spiele.
