Pronoun 'ich' (I, nominative)

ich means "I" - the first-person singular subject pronoun. You use it whenever you are the one doing the action.

After ich, regular verbs take the ending -e on the verb stem:

• Ich wohne in Hamburg. - I live in Hamburg.
• Ich spiele Gitarre. - I play the guitar.
• Ich komme aus Berlin. - I come from Berlin.

A few important verbs are irregular with ich:

• Ich bin müde. - I am tired. (from sein)
• Ich habe Hunger. - I am hungry. (from haben)

Common mistakes:

• Unlike English "I", German ich is only capitalized at the start of a sentence - inside a sentence it is lowercase: Heute bin ich zu Hause.
• Don't forget the -e ending on regular verbs: it is ich komme, not ich komm (the dropped -e is only colloquial speech).
• Keep ich (I) distinct from mich (me, accusative) and mir (to me, dative); ich is only for the subject.
