Explanation
du means "you" - the informal, second-person singular . Use it for one person you know well: a friend, a family member, a child, or a fellow student.
After du, regular verbs take the ending -st:
- Du bist sehr nett. - You are very nice.
- Du wohnst in Köln. - You live in Cologne.
- Du spielst gut Fußball. - You play football well.
If the stem ends in -t or -d, an extra e is added for pronunciation: du arbeitest (you work), du findest (you find).
Common mistakes:
- du is informal. With strangers, officials, or in business, use the polite Sie instead: Woher kommen Sie? not Woher kommst du?
- For several people you address informally, switch to ihr, not du: Ihr seid laut. (You all are loud.)
- Don't confuse du () with dich (you, ) or dir (to you, ).
