Explanation
Most German verbs use the Perfekt to talk about the past in speech, but sein and haben are different: they normally use the Präteritum () even in conversation.
For the first person (ich), the past of sein is war:
- Ich war gestern zu Hause. (I was at home yesterday.)
- Ich war sehr müde. (I was very tired.)
The past stem is war-. Importantly, the ich- and er/sie/es-forms are identical: both are just war (no ending).
