Simple past 'konnte' (could, from können)

konnte is the simple past (Präteritum) of the modal verb können ("can / to be able to"). With modal verbs, German prefers the Präteritum even in everyday spoken language, where it normally uses the perfect tense for other verbs.

Notice that the umlaut disappears: können → konnte. The endings are regular:

• ich/er/sie/es konnte, du konntest, wir/sie konnten, ihr konntet

The main verb stays as an infinitive at the end of the sentence.

Examples:

• Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen. - I couldn't come yesterday.
• Wir konnten das Problem lösen. - We were able to solve the problem.
• Sie konnte sehr gut schwimmen. - She could swim very well.

Common mistakes: Drop the umlaut in the past - it is konnte, not könnte (which is the polite Konjunktiv II, "could/would be able to"). Also remember the infinitive goes to the end: Ich konnte nicht kommen, not Ich konnte kommen nicht.
