Preposition 'von' (from/of, dative)

'von' means 'from' or 'of', and always takes the dative. Its main A1 uses are:

• starting point - where you come from (an activity/place): Ich komme von der Arbeit. - I am coming from work.
• possession / belonging - instead of the genitive in spoken German: Das ist das Auto von meinem Vater. - That is my father's car.
• 'from ... to' with bis: von Montag bis Freitag - from Monday to Friday.

Contraction: von dem merges into vom.

Examples:

• Ich bekomme einen Brief von meiner Freundin. - I get a letter from my girlfriend.
• Er kommt gerade vom Markt. - He is just coming from the market. (von dem -> vom)

Common mistakes:

• Using von for your origin/nationality: say aus (Ich komme aus Polen), not von Polen.
• Forgetting the contraction vom and writing von dem Bahnhof.

'von' (from / of) takes the dative; origin, starting point and possession.

'von' takes the dative; 'von dem' contracts to 'vom'.

'von' (Herkunft / von … weg / Besitz) steht mit dem Dativ.
