Preposition 'ohne' (without, accusative)

'ohne' means 'without' and always takes the accusative. It is the opposite of mit.

A special feature: ohne very often appears without an article, especially with uncountable nouns:

• Ich trinke den Kaffee ohne Milch. - I drink the coffee without milk.
• Ein Tag ohne Musik ist langweilig. - A day without music is boring.

When an article is present, the masculine still changes to the accusative:

• Ich gehe nicht ohne meinen Hund. - I won't go without my dog. (masculine: mein -> meinen)
• Sie kommt ohne ihren Mann. - She is coming without her husband.

Common mistakes:

• Using the dative with pronouns: ohne mich/dich, not ohne mir/dir.
• Adding an unnecessary article (ohne Zucker is more natural than ohne den Zucker).
