Preposition 'nach' (after/to, dative)

'nach' means 'to' (a place) or 'after' (in time), and always takes the dative. Its two key A1 uses are:

• destination - cities and most countries without an article: Ich fahre nach Berlin. - I am going to Berlin. Wir fliegen nach Spanien. - We are flying to Spain.
• time 'after' - what happens later: Nach der Arbeit gehe ich nach Hause. - After work I go home.

The fixed expression nach Hause means 'home (toward home)'.

Examples:

• Der Zug fährt nach Hamburg. - The train goes to Hamburg.
• Nach dem Essen trinke ich Kaffee. - After the meal I drink coffee.

Common mistakes:

• Using nach for countries that have an article: it is in die Schweiz / in die USA, not nach der Schweiz.
• Confusing nach and zu: nach for cities/countries (nach Köln), zu for people and places (zur Schule, zu meiner Oma).

'nach' (to / after) takes the dative; used for cities/countries and time.

'nach' takes the dative; for cities/countries without an article and for 'after'.
