Preposition 'mit' (with, dative)

'mit' means 'with' or 'by', and always takes the dative. Two A1 uses are very common:

• company / accompaniment - doing something together with someone: Ich spiele mit meinem Freund. - I play with my friend.
• means of transport - how you travel: Ich fahre mit dem Zug. - I travel by train. (English 'by', German mit dem)

It is also used for an instrument or tool: Ich schreibe mit einem Stift. - I write with a pen.

Examples:

• Ich fahre mit dem Bus. - I go by bus.
• Sie kommt mit ihrer Schwester. - She is coming with her sister.

Common mistakes:

• Using the accusative - it is mit dem Auto, not mit das Auto.
• For transport, learners forget mit: it is mit dem Fahrrad (by bike), not just dem Fahrrad. (Exception: zu Fuß - on foot - has no mit.)
