Preposition 'bei' (at/with, dative)

'bei' means roughly 'at', 'near' or 'at someone's place', and always takes the dative. Its core A1 uses are:

• at someone's home or place: Ich wohne bei meinen Eltern. - I live with my parents.
• at a workplace / company: Sie arbeitet bei BMW. - She works at BMW.
• near / close to something: Das Hotel ist beim Bahnhof. - The hotel is near the station.

Contraction: bei dem merges into beim.

Examples:

• Wir treffen uns beim Arzt. - We meet at the doctor's. (bei dem -> beim)
• Bei mir ist es warm. - At my place it is warm.

Common mistakes:

• Confusing bei (staying / being at a place) with zu (going to a place): Ich gehe zu meiner Oma (movement) but Ich bin bei meiner Oma (location).
• Forgetting the contraction beim and writing bei dem Arzt.

'bei' (at / near / with) takes the dative.

'bei' always takes the dative; 'bei dem' contracts to 'beim'.

'bei' (bei jemandem / in der Nähe) steht mit dem Dativ.
