Preposition 'aus' (from/out of, dative)

'aus' means 'from' or 'out of' and always takes the dative. Its two most common A1 uses are:

• Origin - where a person or thing comes from: Ich komme aus der Schweiz. - I come from Switzerland.
• 'out of' - coming out of an enclosed place: Er kommt aus dem Haus. - He comes out of the house.

It is also used for the material something is made of: Der Tisch ist aus Holz. - The table is made of wood.

More examples:

• Sie kommt aus Italien. - She comes from Italy. (countries without an article take no article after aus)
• Ich nehme das Buch aus der Tasche. - I take the book out of the bag.

Common mistakes:

• Using von for your home country: for nationality/origin say aus, not von (Ich komme aus Spanien, not von Spanien).
• Putting the noun in the accusative - aus is always dative (aus der Tasche, not aus die Tasche).
