Explanation
Ordinal numbers say the position of something in a sequence: first, second, third. For the numbers 1 to 19, you form them by adding -te to the word: vier becomes vierte, fünf becomes fünfte, sechs becomes sechste.
A few are irregular and must be learned:
- 1 → erste (not einte)
- 3 → dritte (not dreite)
- 7 → siebte (not siebente)
- 8 → achte (only one t, not achtte)
Ordinals are adjectives, so they take the normal endings: der zweite Tag, das dritte Haus, die erste Straße, am siebten Juni, im dritten Stock.
In writing, a with a dot means an ordinal: 2. = zweite, 8. = achte.
Common mistake: Do not forget the irregular forms. It is der erste and der dritte, never der einte or der dreite.
