Meaning. können means can / to be able to. It expresses ability (Ich kann schwimmen - I can swim) and possibility (Das kann sein - That may be). It is also used for polite requests (Kannst du mir helfen? - Can you help me?).
Conjugation (irregular singular).
- ich kann
- du kannst
- er/sie/es kann
- wir können
- ihr könnt
- sie/Sie können
Note the vowel change ö → a in the , and that the ich- and er-forms are identical with no ending.
Word order - the bracket. können sits in position 2; the main verb is an infinitive at the end:
- Ich kann gut schwimmen. - I can swim well.
- Kannst du Deutsch sprechen? - Can you speak German?
- Hier kann man parken. - One can park here.
Common mistakes. Do not write er kannt - the er-form is kann, no -t. Keep the second as an at the end (Ich kann schwimmen, not Ich kann schwimme).
