Explanation
What it is. ja as an unstressed modal particle in the middle field marks information as already known / shared or expresses surprise. It is completely separate from the answer-word ja (= yes).
Main uses.
- Shared knowledge ("as you know"): Du weißt ja, wie er ist. - You know how he is, after all.
- Surprise at something just noticed: Das ist ja toll! - Wow, that's great!
Examples.
- Es regnet ja! - Oh, it's raining! (just noticed)
- Wir kennen uns ja schon lange. - We've known each other a long time, as you know.
- Da bist du ja endlich! - There you are at last!
Common mistakes. Do not stress it and do not read it as "yes" - Das ist ja toll does not mean "Yes, that is great." Used in commands, stressed ja turns into an urgent warning (Mach das ja nicht! - Don't you dare do that!), which is a different, emphatic use.
