Explanation

What it is. halt is an unstressed modal particle expressing resigned matter-of-factness - "that's just how it is, nothing to be done." It is colloquial and especially common in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland; it overlaps closely with eben.

Main use. It signals acceptance of an unchangeable situation.

  • Das ist halt so. - That's just how it is.
  • Dann müssen wir halt warten. - Then we'll just have to wait.
  • Er ist halt noch jung. - Well, he's still young, after all.

Common mistakes. Keep halt unstressed and in the middle field; do not confuse it with the form halt! (= stop!) or the Halt (= hold/stop). Because it is informal, avoid halt in formal written German, where you would phrase the resignation differently (e.g. nun einmal).
