Concessive connector 'wenngleich' (even though)

What it is: wenngleich is a subordinating conjunction meaning even though / albeit. It is formal and often introduces a restricting afterthought - conceding a limitation while maintaining the main point.

How it is formed: It sends the finite verb to the end of its clause:

• Wenngleich + subject + … + finite verb (final), main clause

It frequently appears in a postposed, restrictive position: …, wenngleich mit Einschränkungen (… albeit with reservations).

Examples:

• Wenngleich die Lage ernst ist, besteht Hoffnung. - Even though the situation is serious, there is hope.

Common mistakes: As a subjunctor it requires verb-final order. In the shortened form (wenngleich mit Einschränkungen) no verb follows, which is acceptable. Do not combine it with aber/trotzdem in the main clause.
