Connector 'folglich' (consequently)

What it is. folglich means consequently / therefore and marks a conclusion or result drawn from the preceding statement. It is slightly less rarefied than mithin but still belongs to careful written German.

How it works. It is a conjunctional adverb, so placing it first triggers inversion: the finite verb stands before the subject.

• Er war krank, folglich blieb er zu Hause. - He was ill; consequently he stayed home.
• Die Belege fehlen, folglich lässt sich die Behauptung nicht halten. - The evidence is missing; consequently the claim cannot be maintained.
• Alle Fristen waren verstrichen, folglich wurde der Antrag abgewiesen. - All deadlines had passed; consequently the application was rejected.

Common mistakes. Because folglich is an adverb, not a conjunction, write folglich blieb er (verb before subject), never folglich er blieb. Do not confuse a result (folglich) with a mere reason (weil/da).
