What it is. und (and) is a coordinating . It links equal elements: two words, two phrases, or two main clauses. It adds one thing to another.
Word order. und sits in position 0 - it does not count as a sentence element. That means the clause after it keeps normal word order, with the conjugated still in position 2. There is no inversion.
Examples.
- Ich trinke Kaffee und ich lese die Zeitung. - I drink coffee and I read the newspaper.
- Anna und Tom kommen heute. - Anna and Tom are coming today.
- Ich kaufe Brot und Milch. - I buy bread and milk.
Common mistakes.
- Do not invert the after und: und ich lese, not und lese ich.
- No comma is needed before und when it links two main clauses (unlike aber and denn).
- If the is the same, you can drop it: Ich trinke Kaffee und lese die Zeitung.
