Explanation

When a comparative or superlative stands before a , it still needs a normal adjective ending on top of the marker.

How it is built:

  • Comparative: stem + -er (+ ending): schön → schöner → das schönere Haus.
  • Superlative: stem + -(e)st (+ ending): schön → schönst → das schönste Haus.

Many short adjectives add an (alt → älter → ältest-, groß → größer → größt-).

Examples:

  • Das ist das schönere Auto. - That is the nicer car.
  • Das ist das schönste Haus im Dorf. - That is the most beautiful house in the village.
  • Ich suche einen billigeren Flug. - I am looking for a cheaper flight.

Common mistakes. Don't forget the final ending after the marker: it is das schönste Haus, not das schönst Haus. Note the difference between the attributive (before a : das schnellste Auto) and the adverbial form am schnellsten, which is used after a and takes no further ending (Er fährt am schnellsten).
