Explanation
The comparative lets you say that one thing has more of a quality than another. You use it whenever you compare two unequal things: bigger, faster, older, and so on.
For regular adjectives, you simply add -er to the base form, and you use als for the English word "than".
- klein → kleiner (small → smaller)
- schnell → schneller (fast → faster)
- alt → älter (old → older)
Many short adjectives with the vowels a, o, u also take an umlaut: alt → älter, groß → größer, jung → jünger.
Examples:
- Mein Bruder ist größer als ich. - My brother is taller than I am.
- Heute ist es kälter als gestern. - Today it is colder than yesterday.
- Der Zug fährt schneller als das Auto. - The train goes faster than the car.
Common mistakes: The biggest error is using wie instead of als for unequal . Always say größer als, never größer wie. Also avoid the doubled form größer als wie, which is non-standard. Remember the on short adjectives: it is älter, not alter.
