Explanation

Parallelism and climax are rhetorical figures of syntax. Parallelism repeats the same grammatical structure across successive members; climax arranges those members in rising intensity, from weakest to strongest. Combined, often as a three-part group (the rhetorical triad), they lend prose and oratory rhythm, balance and force.

  • Er kam, er sah, er siegte. - He came, he saw, he conquered. (Caesar's triad - parallel and climactic.)
  • Er prüfte, er wog ab, er entschied. - He examined, he weighed, he decided.
  • Nicht mit Worten, nicht mit Versprechen, sondern mit Taten überzeugte er. - Not with words, not with promises, but with deeds he convinced.

The canonical effect needs the members to be grammatically parallel and ordered so that each step outweighs the last.

Common mistakes: Climax fails if the order is random or anticlimactic - put the strongest member last. Parallelism breaks if the members differ in structure (mixing a phrase with a full clause weakens the figure). Reserve these devices for emphatic, formal or literary passages; overuse sounds bombastic.

About Climax and parallelism as a syntactic stylistic device

Rhetorical triads, parallelism and climax: syntactically parallel members arranged in rising intensity for oratorical effect.

Parallelism repeats the same structure across members; climax orders them by increasing weight. The rhetorical triad ('ich kam, ich sah, ich siegte') is the classic vehicle of persuasive prose.

Rhetorische Dreiergruppen, Parallelismus und Klimax: syntaktisch gleichgebaute, sich steigernde Glieder zur rednerischen Wirkung.

Caution

The triad ('Veni, vidi, vici' principle) is the canonical figure; for full effect the members must be grammatically parallel and ordered from weakest to strongest.
