High-register causal and consecutive connectors

This group covers elevated causal and consecutive connectors that lift argumentative prose above everyday weil, also and so … dass. The main members are:

• zumal - especially since: adds a reinforcing reason. Die Sitzung wurde vertagt, zumal das Quorum ohnehin nicht erreicht worden war. - The session was adjourned, especially since the quorum had not been reached anyway.
• mithin - hence / therefore: draws a sober logical conclusion, drier than also. Die Prämissen sind falsch, mithin ist der Schluss ungültig. - The premises are false, hence the conclusion is invalid.
• dergestalt … dass / derart … dass - in such a way that: correlative pairs for manner and result, more formal than so … dass. Er reformierte den Apparat dergestalt, dass kein Vorgang unkontrolliert blieb. - He reformed the apparatus in such a way that no process went unchecked.

zumal and mithin are adverbial connectors and trigger inversion when fronted; dergestalt/derart … dass introduces a verb-final dass-clause.

Common mistakes:

• Using mithin loosely as "and so" - it marks a strict inference, not a casual continuation.
• Treating zumal as a neutral weil; it always intensifies an already-given reason.
• Forgetting inversion after fronted mithin (not mithin der Schluss ist ungültig, but mithin ist der Schluss ungültig).
