Explanation
Unreal comparisons describe how something seems or appears - a counterfactual likeness. They use the subjunctive (Konjunktiv); is the safe choice, Konjunktiv I sounds elevated.
Three patterns differ in :
- als ob + -final: Er tut, als ob er schliefe. - He acts as if he were sleeping.
- als wenn (more colloquial) + -final: Es war, als wenn die Zeit stillstünde. - It was as if time stood still.
- bare als + finite directly after it: Sie sah aus, als hätte sie geweint. - She looked as if she had been crying.
The key contrast: after als ob/als wenn the goes to the end; after bare als the comes immediately.
- Er blickte mich an, als sähe er mich zum ersten Mal. - He looked at me as if he were seeing me for the first time.
Common mistakes:
- Putting the at the end after bare als (wrong: als er mich zum ersten Mal sähe).
- Using the (als ob er schläft), which loses the unreal sense.
