An indirect W-question reports a question that begins with a question word (wer, was, wann, wo, wie, warum, welche …). The W-word stays at the front of the , but the conjugated moves to the end.
A direct question like Wann fährt der Zug? becomes: Ich weiß nicht, wann der Zug fährt.
- Kannst du mir sagen, wann der Zug fährt? - Can you tell me when the train leaves?
- Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt. - I don't know where he lives.
- Sag mir, wie das funktioniert. - Tell me how this works.
Common mistakes: Keep the W-word but change the ; do not copy the direct question. It is wann der Zug fährt, not wann fährt der Zug. The W-word itself works as the link, so you do not add dass or ob in front of it.
