Explanation

What it is. niemand means no one / nobody and is the negative counterpart of jemand. It refers to the absence of any person.

How it is used. niemand takes a singular verb and already contains the - so you do not add nicht. Like jemand, it may add -en / -em in the and in careful writing, but the bare form is common at A2.

Examples.

  • Niemand ist zu Hause. - No one is at home.
  • Ich habe niemanden gesehen. - I didn't see anybody.
  • Sie spricht mit niemandem. - She talks to no one.

Common mistakes. Do not double the : Niemand kommt, never Niemand kommt nicht. Use it for people only - for things the negative is nichts.
