Genitive preposition 'aufgrund' (because of)

aufgrund is a formal preposition governing the genitive and meaning because of / on the basis of. It names the reason for something and is the written-register equivalent of the more colloquial wegen. You will meet it constantly in news reports, official letters and academic writing.

Structure: aufgrund + Genitiv.

• Aufgrund des Streiks fällt der Zug aus. - Because of the strike, the train is cancelled.
• Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage wurde die Produktion erhöht. - Owing to the high demand, production was increased.

When the noun has no genitive marker (e.g. a bare plural), German uses aufgrund von + Dativ: aufgrund von Verzögerungen (due to delays). The spelling auf Grund is also accepted.

Common mistakes:

• Using the dative with a normal noun: write aufgrund des Wetters (genitive), not aufgrund dem Wetter.
• Overusing it in speech - in conversation wegen is more natural.
