Explanation

What it means. gegenüber is a with three main uses:

  • Spatial - "opposite", "across from", "facing": gegenüber dem Rathaus (across from the town hall).
  • Attitude / relationship - "toward", "with respect to (a person)": Sie ist mir gegenüber immer freundlich (she is always friendly toward me).
  • Comparison - "compared to / in with": Gegenüber dem Vorjahr sind die Preise gestiegen (compared to last year, prices have risen).

Case government. gegenüber always takes the dative - never the or . So the and any ending are : dem Bahnhof (m/n), der Kirche (f), den Häusern (, note the extra -n).

Word order (this is the tricky part).

  • With a pronoun, gegenüber is almost always placed after it: mir gegenüber, dir gegenüber, ihm gegenüber, ihr gegenüber, uns gegenüber, ihnen gegenüber. Forms like gegenüber mir sound wrong.
  • With a noun, both orders are correct: gegenüber dem Park or dem Park gegenüber. In everyday speech the postposed form (dem Park gegenüber) is common with people and places.

As an adverb. gegenüber can also stand alone (no ): Er wohnt gegenüber. (He lives across the street.) Die Bäckerei ist gleich gegenüber. (The bakery is right across the way.)

Contrast with von ... gegenüber / gegenüber von. In colloquial German you often hear gegenüber von dem Bahnhof; the plain gegenüber dem Bahnhof is the neutral standard form.

Most common mistake. Using the wrong - gegenüber den Bahnhof () or gegenüber des Bahnhofs () are both wrong; it must be the gegenüber dem Bahnhof. The second frequent error is putting gegenüber before a (gegenüber mir) instead of after it (mir gegenüber).

Lernende setzen das Objekt fälschlich in den Akkusativ oder Genitiv - gegenüber steht immer mit dem Dativ (dem, der, den + -n im Plural).
