Explanation

What "gar" means

"gar" is a small intensifying particle. On its own it means nothing concrete - its job is to make a negation stronger, roughly "at all" or "überhaupt" in English/German terms. You will meet it above all in two fixed combinations at B1 level:

  • gar nicht = not at all
  • gar kein / gar keine / gar keinen ... = no ... at all / none at all

It also combines with other negatives:

  • gar nichts = nothing at all
  • gar niemand / gar keiner = nobody at all
  • gar nie / gar nirgends = never at all / nowhere at all

Forms and

"gar" is invariable - it never takes an ending. Whatever comes after it keeps its own grammar:

  • With nicht nothing else changes: Das stimmt gar nicht. (That is not true at all.)
  • With kein- the still declines for gender, and :
  • gar keine Zeit (feminine )
  • gar keinen Grund (masculine )
  • gar kein Geld (neuter )
  • gar keine Freunde ()

So "gar" adds case government of its own to nothing - the is decided by the and its /, exactly as with a normal "-".

Position: "gar" stands immediately in front of the word it negates. In a the finite stays in position 2 and the "gar / gar kein-" unit sits later in the sentence: Ich verstehe das gar nicht. In a the finite still goes to the end: ..., weil ich gar keine Zeit habe.

When to use it

Use "gar" when you want to sound emphatic: not just "no time" but "no time at all". It is neutral, everyday standard German and very common in speech.

A second, more literary meaning of "gar" is "even/sogar" (Er hat gar geweint. - He even cried.), but this is old-fashioned and not the B1 focus here.

Most common mistake

Do not use "gar" on its own to mean "not" - it always needs a partner (gar nicht, gar kein-), never "Ich habe gar Zeit." And keep the ending on "-": it is gar keine Zeit, not "gar kein Zeit". Also put "gar" before the , not after it (gar nicht, not "nicht gar").

About gar (at all - gar nicht / gar kein)

The particle "gar" intensifies a : "gar nicht" = not at all, "gar kein-" = no ... at all. It is invariable and always stands directly in front of the negation word.

"gar" is an intensifying particle placed directly in front of a : gar nicht (not at all), gar kein-/keine/keinen (no ... at all), gar nichts (nothing at all), gar niemand (nobody at all). It never changes its form, but the following kein- still declines for gender and .

Die Partikel "gar" verstärkt eine : "gar nicht" = überhaupt nicht, "gar kein-" = überhaupt kein-. Sie ist unveränderlich und steht direkt vor dem Verneinungswort.

Caution

Learners forget that "gar" stands before the negation and does not replace it - it must combine with "nicht", "kein-", "nichts" or "niemand" (say "gar nicht", never "gar" alone), and "kein-" still has to take the correct ending (gar keine Zeit, not gar kein Zeit).

Lernende vergessen, dass "gar" vor der Verneinung steht und sie nicht ersetzt - es muss mit "nicht", "kein-", "nichts" oder "niemand" verbunden werden ("gar nicht", nie "gar" allein), und "kein-" behält seine richtige Endung (gar keine Zeit, nicht gar kein Zeit).
