Ellipsis and aposiopesis as stylistic devices

These are two stylistic devices of omission.

Ellipse (ellipsis) drops an element - a verb, subject or object - that is unambiguously recoverable from context, producing terse, punchy phrasing:

• Ende gut, alles gut. - All's well that ends well. (no verb)
• Je früher, desto besser. - The sooner the better. (no verb)

Aposiopese (aposiopesis) breaks a sentence off mid-flow, leaving the audience to complete it. It signals emotion, threat or implication and is marked typographically by a dash or ellipsis points:

• Wenn ich nur gewusst hätte … - If only I had known …
• Wäre er doch nur geblieben - doch wozu noch darüber nachsinnen. - If only he had stayed - but what use is there in dwelling on it.

Both are charged rhetorical choices, common in literature, speeches and dialogue.

Common mistakes:

• Omitting something the reader cannot reconstruct, so the ellipsis becomes a genuine grammatical error rather than a device.
• Using aposiopesis without the dash or ellipsis points; the typographical break is what signals the deliberate cut-off.
• Overusing either device, which makes prose feel mannered or evasive.
