Elevated genitive constructions include the doubled genitive and the deliberate handling of subjective vs. objective genitive ambiguity.

A genitive after a deverbal noun can be:

• subjective - the genitive is the agent: die Entscheidung des Gerichts (the court decides)
• objective - the genitive is the patient: die Verurteilung des Täters (the offender is condemned)

Many phrases are ambiguous: die Beobachtung des Forschers - does the researcher observe, or is he observed? Writers disambiguate with vonseiten (die Beobachtung vonseiten des Forschers = the researcher observes) or by rewording.

The doubled genitive stacks two genitives and is a marked, learned construction:

• die Bewertung der Leistung des Schülers - the assessment of the pupil's performance
• das Haus des Vaters meines Freundes - the house of my friend's father

Example:

• Die Bewertung der Leistung des Schülers fiel unerwartet milde aus. - The assessment of the pupil's performance turned out unexpectedly lenient.

Common mistakes: Avoid genitive chains so long the relations blur; sometimes a relative clause or von is clearer. Be aware of the subjective/objective ambiguity and resolve it where meaning matters. Keep correct genitive endings throughout the chain.
